Freshii Introduces Compostable Containers

The University of Kentucky is taking another step towards sustainability by partnering with Kanbol, a Kentucky Proud company specializing in compostable packaging. This collaboration brings Kanbol’s 32 oz compostable bowls to Freshii, offering our campus community an alternative to plastic bowls while supporting Kentucky businesses.

Based in Auburn, Kentucky, Kanbol is on a mission to create compostable and PFAS-free packaging from the most abundant crop in the US – corn! Their alternative containers utilize the leftover raw material – such as leaves, stalks, and shucks – from corn harvested for bourbon production. Over the last 40 years, corn yields have doubled, leaving an increasing amount of raw material that would otherwise be left on the field.

This partnership is a meaningful stride towards the University of Kentucky’s broader commitment to becoming a zero-waste campus. Beyond waste reduction, this initiative supports UK Dining’s larger vision of prioritizing local sourcing and strengthening relationships with Kentucky businesses. By working together, UK Dining, UK Sustainability, and UK Recycling are advancing a unified vision for sustainability on campus.
