Apply Today for the Student Sustainability Internship Program

If you are interested in actively participating in UK’s sustainability efforts, the Sustainability Internship Program is the best place to start! The Sustainability Internship Program offers students a chance to gain valuable tools, experiences, and connections to assist them in landing a professional career in sustainability after graduation. I spoke with Sophie Beavin about how to apply for the internship, the benefits of the SIP Cohort, and a few frequently asked questions about the program.

Sophie Beavin is a Graduate Assistant with the Office of Sustainability. One of her primary responsibilities is to manage the Sustainability Internship Program.  This includes recruiting intern mentors, securing funding, and leading the cohort experience. Here’s what she had to say.

What should I know before applying to the Sustainability Internship Program?

“There are 15 different internship opportunities available for the 2022-2023 semester, covering a wide range of topic areas from waste management to energy to communications. Chances are, you’ll find an internship that aligns with the skills and knowledge you already have. All majors are welcome to apply! If there is more than one role you are interested in, you can submit multiple applications to the program, although you may only accept one position.

This is a paid internship, where students are paid $11 an hour for their position, 8-10 hours per week throughout the entire school year. Applications are open NOW and they are due by Friday, March 11th at midnight.

What makes a strong application for the Sustainability Internship Program?

“Interns will apply through a web form where they must answer three main questions: How do you see this connecting to your major? What skills do you bring to the table? How do you see this internship helping you achieve your future career goals?

I would recommend being as specific as possible! Use detailed examples from work you’ve already done and show how those skills can translate to a position in sustainability. You can even share details of what you hope to accomplish in the internship and any future ideas to contribute to the role. These are entry-level internship opportunities designed to help you gain experience for your future career, so if you don’t have much direct sustainability experience, that’s okay too. As employers, we’re ultimately looking for individuals who have a passion for sustainability and the relevant skills from any experience to succeed in the position.”

What professional and academic resources are available to students who are a part of the internship?

“The SIP cohort experience is a super great benefit of being a part of the internship program! At bi-weekly meetings, interns will have the opportunity to gain professional development, connect with like-minded students pursuing careers in sustainability, and gain helpful experience that applies to their day-to-day tasks as sustainability interns.

Last year, we helped students create resumes and cover letters, and we invited the Stuckart Career Center to discuss the process of applying to grad school. This year, we’ll be conducting mock interviews and have even more opportunities for students to professionally network! Interns also have the chance to complete an independent project throughout the school year. Independent projects are a great opportunity to explore a specific topic you’re interested in and gain tangible experience to add to your resume.

Over the past several years, the Sustainability Internship Program has had a great success rate of students landing jobs in the field of sustainability after graduation. After the program, students often go on to become leaders in sustainability, through both their professional and personal endeavors. This internship program is a truly invaluable resource for UK students and I look forward to seeing what our interns will accomplish in the next year!”
