Applications are now open for the 2026-2027 Sustainability Internship Program (SIP). The SIP pairs students with sustainability-related offices and units from across the campus to advance sustainability initiatives in exciting and meaningful ways.
Interns are paid $15.55/hour for 8-10 hours of work per week. The internships start in mid-August and run through the end of the spring semester, following the academic calendar. Interns will work with their mentor to support a specific sustainability unit on campus, develop a sustainability initiative or project, and participate in a professional development series with the full cohort of interns.
If you are interested in applying, please complete the form linked on UK Sustainability’s website. Continue reading for more information about the program and application process.

- Communication and media
With the variety of internships available, you’ll likely find an opportunity that aligns with your skills and interests! If multiple positions appeal to you, you’re welcome to apply for more than one—but keep in mind that you may only accept one offer if selected.
Applications are open NOW, and they are due by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 29th, 2026.
What Makes SIP Unique?
Rather than simply assisting with tasks, interns will be actively making an impact through meaningful projects, developing a sustainability initiative of their own. A key focus of the program is ensuring that you leave the internship with experience you can speak about in interviews or graduate school applications. Each intern is matched with a mentor who will support them in the internship as well as their proposed project. This one-on-one mentorship ensures that your experience is personalized, intentional, and aligned with your units.
A key component of the SIP is biweekly professional development sessions with your fellow interns. These sessions include:
- Mentor presentations to expand your professional network
- Professional development curriculum
- Hands-on activities and sustainability tours
Application process
Prospective interns will apply through a web form and answer several key questions:
- Why are you interested in this internship?
- How do you see this internship connecting to your major?
- How do you see this internship helping you achieve your future career goals?
- What skills or relevant experience do you bring to the table?
Here are some ways to stand out:
- Use detailed examples from work you’ve already done and show how those skills can translate to a position in sustainability. Keep in mind that you can connect your experiences to sustainability, even if they aren’t directly related.
- Be as specific as possible when talking about past experiences.
- Share what you hope to accomplish in the internship and any ideas you have for being successful in the position.
These internships are entry-level and designed to help you gain experience. If you don’t have direct sustainability experience, that’s okay! We’re looking for individuals with a genuine passion for sustainability and relevant skills that can help them succeed in the position.
Upon submitting the application, the Office of Sustainability will follow up to request an in-person interview. This internship is an opportunity to lead, collaborate, and grow alongside peers passionate about sustainability.
